LSUS lands transfer in Josh Porter (5/25/2005)

Ex-Southwood star Porter transferring to LSUS by Scott Ferrell

LSU-Shreveport’s men’s basketball recruiting class picked up its third transfer when former Southwood High School star Josh Porter announced a decision to leave Stephen F. Austin for LSUS.

The Pilots earlier picked up Tulsa transfer Kyle Blankenship and Louisiana Tech transfer Jeremy Johnston.

“We are excited about Josh coming to play for the Pilots,” LSUS coach Chad McDowell said.  “We have been fortunate in the past two years to have some high-caliber players in our program and with Josh transferring to LSUS, he will be no exception.  He is a super basketball player and even better young man.”

Porter will be reunited with McDowell, his high school coach.  Porter played four seasons for McDowell at Southwood and was and All-City Selection.  “Coach McDowell is a special coach and I love the style of play that he coaches,” Porter said.  “I’m excited about our team next year and think we will have a great season.”

Porter started 21 of 27 games at Stephen F. Austin last sesason as a sophomore.  He averaged 28.6 minutes per game.  He was the Lumberjacks second-leading scorer last season at 11.3 points per game.  He was sixth in the Southland Conference in 3-point shooting at 39.8 percent.
