LSU Shreveport Continuing Education Program Seeks to Address Local Pharmacy Technician Need

November 13, 2020

Shreveport, LA—The LSU Shreveport Pharmacy Technician program seeks to address the local pharmacy technician need highlighted in a recent United States Bureau of Statistics report.

Offered by Continuing Education, the LSUS Pharmacy Technician program is accredited, online and can be completed in as little as four months. The rapidly-expanding field is predicted to grow by 12 percent, or over 47,000 new jobs, before 2026.

“The growing number of Pharmacy Technician professionals needed in the field to meet the high demand for prescriptions is fueled by an aging population and continued scientific developments,” LSUS Director of Conferences & Institutes, Tulin Melancon said. “The learners will progress at a pace that matches their learning style and fits their schedule. Once they complete the program, students can have a new career once they satisfy all the Louisiana state requirements.”

Accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the program prepares students for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Exam and trains them for careers in both retail and institutional healthcare settings.

Once students complete all coursework, they participate in a local pharmacy externship. Though the program can be completed in as little as four months, students are allowed up to twelve months with the option to add a four-month extension if needed. The LSUS partnership with CareerStep allows for seamless entry into a local externship.

“CareerStep's externship partnerships with community pharmacies such as Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy to help learners fulfill their externship requirements in local areas,” Melancon added. “Pharmacy Technicians can work in pharmacies, drug stores, hospitals, general merchandise stores and food and beverage stores.”
