LSUS Debate Team Dominates at the Southern Forensics Championship

SHREVEPORT, LA-The LSUS Debate team recently took first place overall for the state of Louisiana at the annual Southern Forensics Championship Tournament, held at Mississippi State University on January 24th through the 26th 2020.

LSUS, which competed in both the team IPDA, Individual IPDA and Individual speaking Events placed second in the varsity division of the individual tournament and placed first in the team IPDA division as well as Louisiana state champions in team debate, varsity debate division, and the professional division.

Team members Dominic Mercer and Matthew Gedeon won first place and Louisiana state champions for the Team International Public Debate Association portion of the tournament. LSUS graduate student Leia Smith placed as the Louisiana state champion for the professional division and Dominic Mercer finished as the Louisiana state champion for the varsity division. In addition, LSUS received multiple speaking awards for the individual debate portions of the competition.
