December 21, 2015

LSUS Debate Invited Back to Join U.S. Team on 2016 Montgomery Cup

Members of the LSU Shreveport Debate Team have been asked to rejoin the United States debate team as they compete against British debaters for the Montgomery Cup.

In 2015, LSUS members joined from the University of Central Missouri winning a 19-17 victory over the British traveling through Scotland and England. The Cup will take place Feb. 28-March 15, 2016 and will lead the U.S. team to Ireland and Scotland. A large majority of the cost of the trip is being funded through the support of the LSUS Foundation and The Noel Foundation.

The LSUS representatives are Elizabeth Kemp, a senior political science major from Bossier City; John Brown, a junior psychology major from Shreveport; and Lance Rich, a junior computer science-animation major from Haughton.

They will be accompanied by Trey Gibson, the Bradley S. Kemp professor of debate at LSUS.

Ms. Kemp is a two-time IPDA national champion and a 2015 member of the U.S. Montgomery Cup team. She will be the only returning LSUS veteran competitor for the U.S. team. Brown was a 2015 IPDA national championship Tournament runner-up in the Team Division and Rich ranked 10th in the nation in the 2015 IPDA Varsity Division. Gibson was the 2014 and 2015 Louisiana Debate Coach of the Year and served as an associate coach for the 1998 and 2015 U.S. Montgomery Cup teams. He will serve as one of two senior adjudicators for the United States team.

The Montgomery Cup

The Montgomery Cup Exhibition Debate Tour was instituted in 1996 by the English- Speaking Debate Unions of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales as a competitive, academic, international exchange between outstanding student debate representatives from the United States and Great Britain. It was hoped that through educational and cultural exchanges based upon competitive, exhibition debates that our student representatives would gain greater experience in international perspectives and politics that would serve to open minds and borders.
