LSUS Professor to Author New Biography

LSU Shreveport Professor of History and Social Sciences Dr. Cheryl White will author a new biography of Leonidas Polk to be published by History Press.

Polk was the first missionary Episcopal Bishop of the Southwest and the first Episcopal Bishop of Louisiana. He served as a Lieutenant General in the Confederate Army abd founded over thirty churches throughout Louisiana. Polk was a founder of the University of the South at Sewanee, yet was a slaveholder who relinquished his duties as a bishop to fight for the Confederacy.

The biography will be published in early 2013 and is tentatively titled: "Sword and Crozier: The Bishop General Leonidas Polk."

Dr. White is also a co-author of "Historic Haunts of Shreveport" with Gary Joiner in 2010 and "Wicked Shreveport" with Gary Joiner, Chris Hale and Bernadette Palombo in 2011. She has also published numerous journal articles.
