October 19, 2015

MONROE, LA--LSUS public relations seniors Katie LeJeune and Blair Burlison attended the two-day News Train conference at ULM Oct. 15-16. Both students were sponsored by The (Shreveport) Times and the LSUS Office of Media and Public Relations.

The conference was hosted by Associated Press media editors and covered topics such as using social media as a powerful reporting tool, data- driven enterprises, and journalism ethics in the digital age. The instructors included Daniel Victor, senior staff editor of The New York Times, Manuel Torres, enterprise editor of, and Deb Wenger, University of Mississippi Journalism Department head and 17-year broadcaster.

"Who knew that Excel was such a powerful and helpful resource in Mass Communications?" asked LeJeune. "I had no idea how many resources were available to students and professionals. I am looking forward to sharing all the material with members of LSUS PRSO at the next meeting."

The conference began with a catered dinner and registration Thursday night at the community room of The News-Star. Linda Austin, international educator and project director of News-Train, coordinated the event and oversaw the conference agenda. Breakfast and lunch were provided Friday at the student union building of ULM. The conference ended Friday at 5 p.m. when attendees were given a tour of the ULM Student Publications offices and a wrap-up ceremony was hosted.

"It was such a beneficial opportunity that I was honored to attend," Burlison said. "I could not believe the amount of material I actually learned, like the importance of using, or not using a hash tag."
