Veterans Day Ceremony Nov. 11 to Feature BAFB History and Museums Director

LSU Shreveport will host its annual Veterans Day commemorative program on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at the flagpole in the center ofcampus. 

The program will feature Yancy Mailes as the guest speaker. Mailes is the director of the Air Force Global Strike Command Historyand Museums Program, Barksdale Air Force Base. He is responsible for establishing policy and preserving the Command's institutional memory and its material heritage.

The Command's nine wings control the nation's entire inventory of Minuteman III intercontinental ballisticmissiles, B-1, B-2 and B-52 bomber aircraft. Therefore, he is responsiblefor ensuring that historians concentrate on documenting recent history (both at home station and in the deployed area) while maintaining the Command's unclassified and classified archives, and answering leadership and public inquiries.

He also directs the Command's heritage program through museum exhibits, heritage displays, well-maintained airparks, and educational outreach programs, and he is responsible for the Command's Air Force Art Program.

Mailes began his professional career in 1987 with the F-117 Stealth Fighter program and became a USAF historian in 1996. During his career, he was deployed numerous times, including stints as the Operation Southern and Northern Watch historian. In 2003 he deployed to Iraq, where he documented the history off the 332d Air Expeditionary Wing. Most recently, he served as the historian for the only high-altitude reconnaissance wing operating in southwest Asia.
