Faculty and Unclassified Employees
Effective June 11, 2020, the Louisiana State Legislature passed SB437 which was signed by the Governor and became Act No. 241. The legislation expands the use of accrued sick leave by Unclassified (Professional, Academic, Other Academic, and Professional Hourly) employees as follows:

Sick leave may now be used to care for an immediate family member who is ill or injured or to accompany an immediate family member to a medical, dental, or optical consultation or treatment. An immediate family member is defined as a spouse, parent, or child of an employee.

Classified Employees
The Louisiana Department of State Civil Service adopted changes to Chapters 1 and 11 of the Civil Service Handbook effective May 7, 2020, allowing the expanded use of sick leave by classified employees to care for an immediate family member who is ill or injured or who requires medical, dental or optical treatment when it is not possible to arrange such appointments for non-duty hours.

LSU System Policy PM-20 is currently under revision to reflect the expanded use of sick leave.

Workday Instructions

To request sick time off in Workday:
- Log on to Workday using your MyLSU ID (formerly paws ID) and password. Click here to log on to Workday.
- Once you reach the MyLSU screen, select “Workday.”
-  Once you are on the homepage, select the time off” worklet.
-  Under request, select “time off.”
You will see a calendar. Select the applicable day(s), then select the blue “request time off” button at the bottom of the screen.
- A box will appear.  For the time type, select “SICK” time off toward the bottom of the drop-down list. The daily quantity (number of hours) can be adjusted from the default of 8 hours. Comments may be added.  It is very important that the “SICK” time type is selected.
- Select “submit.” It will go to your supervisor for approval.
- Please note that a supervisor may ask for documentation (e.g., doctor’s note).

*Please make sure that you do not select FMLA or EPSL unless instructed to do so by a representative in Human Resources.
