SHREVEPORT – Nonprofits in North Louisiana won’t want to miss an opportunity to learn and network with organizations from across the state as LSUS is co-hosting the Statewide Conference for Louisiana’s Nonprofits in September.
The early registration deadline is Aug. 20 with the chance to register for $100 (rate for members of the Louisiana Alliance for Nonprofits) or a $250 fee for non-members.
The primary day will be Sept. 20 with an optional session on Sept. 19 ($25 additional fee).
Co-hosts LSUS and the Louisiana Alliance For Nonprofits have assembled a slate of nationally recognized speakers who will address the most pressing issues facing nonprofits in this professional development conference.
“We are so excited about this great partnership between the Louisiana Alliance for Nonprofits and LSUS’s INAR to co-host this second statewide nonprofit conference,” said Jill Roshto, executive director of the Louisiana Alliance for Nonprofits. “It has been many years since a statewide nonprofit conference has been held in the northern part of the state.”
Topics range from nonprofit employee wellbeing, fundraising, cybersecurity and board governance.

“This is the first time in many years the statewide nonprofit conference has been held in this part of Louisiana,” said Dr. Heather Carpenter, the executive director for LSUS’s Institute for Nonprofit Administration and Research. “We are excited to bring in nonprofit experts from around the country and Louisiana for this professional development day.”
Keynote speaker Beth Kanter is an internationally acclaimed nonprofit thought leader who has authored four books and numerous research papers, including “The Happy, Healthy Nonprofit: Strategies for Impact Without Burnout.”
Kanter, whose clients include the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will be discussing workplace well-being impact without burnout.
With more than three decades of experience in the nonprofit sector with emerging technology, training and capacity building, Kanter was named one of the most influential women in technology by Fast Company and one of BusinessWeek’s “Voices of Innovation for Social Media.”
Keynote luncheon speaker Maya Enista Smith will educate attendees about building nonprofits with kindness.
Smith has more than 15 years of experience in building global movements for community service.
An advocate for mental health and kindness, Smith has served in leadership positions of Mobilize.org and as the first executive director of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation.
Steve Higgins will share best practices for fundraising, focusing on how fundraising is a team effort that requires everyone in the organization.
The certified fundraising executive for Carter Federal, Higgins advises nonprofits on major and mega gift strategies along with leadership coaching and organizational assessment among other areas.
Dr. Heather Carpenter, the executive director for LSUS’s Institute for Nonprofit Administration and Research, will provide a “state of nonprofits” update from across Louisiana.
Carpenter, who is the director of the Nonprofit Administration masters program and added an undergraduate degree this fall, is a highly networked professor, researcher and trainer who has co-authored papers on nonprofit’s response to COVID-19 and nonprofit talent development.
Diversity, equity and inclusion continue to be driving forces in the nonprofit sector, and Maxine Crump will discuss racial dynamics in nonprofit organizations.
Crump, the CEO of Dialogue on Race Louisiana, has led that organization for more than a decade and recently earned the 2023 Barton Award for Non-Profit Management and the 2022 Volunteer Activist Award from the Emerge Foundation.
Nonprofits are not immune from cyber threats and attacks, and Ned Fasullo will offer methods of protection for nonprofits.
Fasullo, president of Apex Technologies, has worked with entities such as Lucent Technologies, Nextel Communications and Global Data Systems.
Dr. Colton Strawser is an expert trainer and consultant for nonprofits and will supply his insight into effective governance.
As president of Colton Strawser Consulting, he has trained more than 1,000 organizations and generated more than $25 million in government grants.
Strawser, a certified fundraising executive, will also lead the optional session on Sept. 19 focusing on fundraising strategies to elevate development programs. That session is sponsored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, North Louisiana Chapter.
