This year, we've decided to make homecoming bigger and better than ever! On the calendar listings below, you'll find information on events for students, alumni and the community. 2025 will be the 50th anniversary of the first graduating class of LSUS, so they will play host to the other classes celebrating big milestones: 1985, 1995, 2005, 2015, and the soon-to-graduate Class of 2025!

Here's to 50 Years - The Class of 1975

Between 1970 and 1975, Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS) achieved several significant milestones:

  • 1970: LSUS expanded its academic offerings and student services, laying the groundwork for future advancements.
  • 1972: The Louisiana State Legislature authorized LSUS to offer four-year degree programs, transitioning from a two-year institution to a full-fledged university.
  • 1973: LSUS introduced its first bachelor's degree programs, attracting a diverse student body and enhancing its academic reputation.
  • 1974: The university expanded its campus facilities, including new classrooms and laboratories, to accommodate the growing number of students and programs.
  • January 17, 1975: Donald Alexander designed the "Riverboat Pilots" symbol, reflecting LSUS's connection to the Red River and its maritime heritage.
  • May 15, 1975: LSUS held its inaugural commencement ceremony, conferring degrees upon its first graduating class.

These milestones from 1970 to 1975 laid a strong foundation for LSUS's ongoing commitment to academic excellence and community engagement.

Here are milestone highlights from 1985, 1995, 2005, and 2015 to celebrate these LSUS graduating classes:

Class of 1985

  • March 15, 1985: The Crape Myrtles, which have become an iconic part of the LSUS campus landscape, were planted. This initiative not only beautified the campus but also marked a commitment to creating a welcoming environment.
  • October 11, 1985: The Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society was established at LSUS, offering a prestigious academic organization that celebrates scholastic excellence​ (Classes of 1975-2015).

Class of 1995

  • September 9, 1994: The Noel Memorial Library, a significant resource for students and faculty, opened its doors, enhancing research and learning capabilities on campus.
  • November 9, 1995: LSUS gained internet access, connecting the campus to global information networks and ushering in a new era of digital education and communication​ (Classes of 1975-2015).

Class of 2005

  • April 7, 2005: The LSUS men’s basketball team won the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship, a milestone that highlighted the university’s growing presence in collegiate sports.
  • September 1, 2005: The women’s soccer team was founded, adding to LSUS’s athletic programs and providing new opportunities for student-athletes.
  • September 15, 2005: Pete the Pelican was introduced as the university mascot, symbolizing school spirit and enhancing campus identity​ (Classes of 1975-2015).

Class of 2015

  • January 15, 2015: LSUS held its first bonfire, sparking a new tradition that celebrated campus pride and brought together the student body.
  • March 12, 2015: The LSUS debate team achieved international success by winning championships in Europe, showcasing the university's excellence in debate and public speaking on a global stage​ (Classes of 1975-2015).
