SHREVEPORT – William Shakespeare fans will want to circle Nov. 2 on their calendars as the Texas Shakespeare Festival will perform some of the The Bard’s best material at the University Center Theater.
The day begins at 10 a.m. with “Romeo and Juliet” before a Shakespearean Acting Workshop at 12:15 p.m.
The evening action starts at 6 p.m. with selected scenes from “As You Like It”, “Twelfth Night”, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “Othello” and “The Taming of the Shrew.”
All performances are free and open to the public thanks to sponsorship by the LSUS Office of Academic Affairs and The Noel Memorial Library.
Texas Shakespeare Festival’s Road Show, which brings high-caliber theatrical experiences to the region.
“Shakespeare’s themes of love, redemption, ambition, fear, and jealousy are timeless,” said Brian Sherman, Dean of the of Noel Memorial Library at LSUS. “They still resonate with modern audiences.
“Shakespeare captures human emotions and that’s why his storytelling endures. We’re lucky to be near Kilgore College, which hosts the Texas Shakespeare Festival. Their traveling roadshow allows us to bring live and innovative Shakespeare to Shreveport. Their interpretations stay true to the text, while still being funny, engaging, and contemporary.”
Audiences can expect to be transported to a world of poetic beauty where a passionate love defies the age-old feud between the Montagues and the Capulets in “Romeo and Juliet”. This tragic romance explores the themes of love, fate, and the consequences of long-standing grudges.
Laughter is on the evening docket with some of Shakespeare’s lighter fare.
