BOSSIER CITY – As a top five college fishing program in the nation, LSUS knows a thing or two about putting bass in the boat.

Now its collegiate anglers are sharing tips and tricks of the trade with a monthly seminar at CenterWell Senior Primary Care centers across Shreveport-Bossier.

LSUS anglers have participated in two seminars this year and will be at CenterWell’s Bossier City location on March 11 for another installment. The monthly seminars typically run from 10 a.m. to noon. CenterWell’s Bossier City facility is at 2900 E. Texas Street, Suite 100.

“It gives our boys a chance to get in the community, a chance to speak in front of crowds,” said LSUS Fishing coach Charles Thompson. “CenterWell is a great senior primary senior care center that does great things for the senior population, and part of that is hosting a variety of educational and community events.

“Different seminars have different topics. This winter and into early spring, we’re talking about getting ready for the fishing season by preparing tackle and boats. Winter fishing is also a topic, and some of our boys balance time between the woods (hunting) and the water. Some fish crappie instead of bass in the winter as well.”

Thompson added that while some topics are pre-determined, the audience drives the conversation based on their questions.

“Forward-facing sonar is something everybody wants to talk about,” Thompson said, referring to fishing technology that allows anglers to see bass on a screen. “We talk about all kinds of new technologies and how it impacts the sport.”

“CenterWell is a great sponsor of ours, and it’s been awesome to collaborate with them and to do something positive in the community like interact with their patients. It’s cool to be part of that enrichment through innovative programming like this.”

Boater safety is also included in many seminars, and LSUS Fishing crossed paths with one of its own in former LSUS angler Kenneth Cheramie, who serves as a game warden.

Cheramie gave boater safety tips at a seminar earlier this year.
